Overview

This report was an initiative requested by the Municipality of Bowen Island to help define the path forward for sustainable development on the island. The specific request from BIM’s Planning Department was to produce a strategic framework that would guide proactive implementation of green buildings and sustainable land use planning on some 40 acres of municipality-owned land, located in/and around the Snug Cove Village locally.

These lands, otherwise known as the Surplus Lands, represent a unique opportunity for setting a benchmark for new practices both for public and private levels of development, towards a sustainable community and island legacy for future generations.

As a supporting guideline, this report seeks synergies and comes to supplement ongoing work from other core initiatives such as those from the Surplus Lands Working Group (SLWG), and the Sustainability Framework Working Group (SFWG), which are considered as critical step towards a future BIM’ sustainability plan.
